Media Deconstruction

I have been struggling with my weight most of my life and when an infomercial comes up about losing weight my whole attention is directed towards it.  The thing that worked for me was Slim in 6 so I will do this on that.

1) Who paid for it?  Slim in 6 is part of a huge company called Beachbody.  They have many other different weight loss programs and videos there like Insanity, TurboJam, and P90X.

2) Why does the company need to do the ad?  They need to do the ad to help their company make money by buying the videos.  They also sell diet supplements and meal replacement shakes.  Their weight loss programs are very good and they really do work.

3) What group is targeted by the ad?  I think that people who want to be healthy and in shape are targeted in their advertisements.  Just anyone that wants to be in shape and healthy.

4) What is the ad's "text" and "subtext?'  The text is "Reshape your Body in 6 weeks- GUARANTEED!"  I didn't see a subtext.

5) What value(s) are reinforced?  I think the value of being healthy is reinforced.  Reminding people to take care of their body.

6) What techniques of persuasion are used?  I think the word GUARANTEED to lose weight is the persuasion of technique being used.

  1. I agree with your answer to number 6! I think pretty much all weight loss ads include that word...guaranteed. I've never actually looked into the specific guarantees they're making, but somehow I bet they're worded fairly loosely since losing weight is almost entirely up to the person, not what they eat. You're right, the Beachbody products do usually work, but I think it's because they incorporate really good physical aspects and aren't just some "miracle pill" like so many others you see.

As a side note, I've seen a cunning marketing technique used by weight loss companies before. They word them as if they're warnings, but they say something like "If you lose more than 10 pounds in 10 days, contact a physician". Most people hear that and think, 10 pounds in 10 days? Sign me up! It's like a reverse-warning.

  2. Slim in 6, is this like a work out video? Does it aim at obese people or just anybody in general? I think I'd trust work out videos more than I would trust anything else (i.e. drinks, foods, pills, etc). Any work out video, I think, is a GUARANTEED to lose weight kind of item. :)

  3. Thanks Anastasia. I was interested to read that you found a product that worked for you - very relevant to you. Could you please add a weblink to the advertisement or product?
