Of the examples on the Deconstruction Gallery I chose Halloween Costumes.
1. Why does the company need to do the ad? Many costume stores do ads to sell their product. Every business is up for making money.
2. What group is targeted by the ad? Shoppers are targeted for the ad. They want people to buy their costumes to make them feel sexy or funny to mock some culture or race.
3. What is the ad's "text" and "subtext?" The ad only shows pictures of women dressed in costumes and have price tags on the bottom of each picture. It also shows the name of the costume.
4. Who paid for the ad? It doesn't show on the picture but I think that the people who are selling the costumes paid for the ad.
5. What different meanings would different people perceive? People would perceive some other people's costumes as offensive to them. They are mocking their culture by making the costume "sexy" and not the way it was used in their own culture.
6. What techniques of persuasion are used? The techniques that I think are used in this ad are association, bandwagon, beautiful people, group dynamics, and majority belief.

ReplyDeleteI agree that some would definitely be offended by many of the costumes.
