This month I found myself very interested in Netflix. You can watch unlimited TV shows and movies for just $7.99 a month on your PC, Xbox, PS3, SmartTV, Iphone, and Android. It is amazing what the internet has to offer!
The website for Netflix is www.netflix.com
Why does the company need to do the ad? The company needs to advertise to make money for their company. These days everything is going to the internet. People are starting to not go to Blockbuster to rent a movie. They just use one of these sites and watch a movie. There are many type of sites that you can watch unlimited amount of TV on, that is why Netflix has to do ads.
What group is targeted by the ad? Everyone in the world is targeted for this ad. They have different Genres of movies and TV shows. They have cartoons for the children, romance for women, and action for men. It is a pretty awesome site!
What is not told? What related stories are missing?
After catching up on my TV shows, Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives, I found out that there is a downside to watching "unlimited TV." Watching TV on the internet uses a good amount of data on your internet plan. If you go over you data plan on your internet you gets huge fees. I wasn't that pleased when I found this out. You just have to limit yourself to what you watch.
Is it closer to fantasy or reality? I think it is closer to fantasy because who has the time and the data plan to watch "unlimited" amount of TV. Although it is only $7.99 a month if you don't use it then your just going to lose it.
Does it use stereotypes? I think it uses some sort of stereotypes. It shows photos of family members getting in front of the TV and smiling. I'm not saying that there aren't families like this. But according to me, our family doesn't have much time to watch "unlimited" TV.
What tools of persuasion are used? I think the tools that are used are association, bandwagon, plain folks, and warm and fuzzy.
I really do like Netflix. I don't have much time for TV so I use it to catch up on my favorite shows. Although the downside is that it uses data on your internet plan. I figured out that I have to limit myself to how many shows I can watch within a month!

Media Deconstruction (March)
For this month the media that seemed to be the most consistent with me was the social network Facebook. I'm pretty sure that everyone has a Facebook, and for me it is a way to keep close with my family members and friends.
The website for Facebook is www.facebook.com
1) Who paid for it?
The company that runs Facebook is called Facebook Ireland Limited.
2) What group is targeted by the ad?
There are many groups that are targeted. Some, like me, use Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends, others use it to advertise their own companies, and others use it to help people.
3) What techniques of persuasion are used?
The tools of persuasion are Association, Bandwagon, and Warm and Fuzzy.
4) Is it closer to fantasy or reality?
I think Facebook is closer to reality because all the friends I have are real. They comment on my posts giving me advice and ask how I am doing. But there are some things that are out there that are fake. Companies use Facebook to sell their products also.
5) In what ways does this depict a lifestyle that is healthy and unhealthy?
I think the healthy part about Facebook is keeping in touch with the people you know. If you are feeling down, people say many things to keep your head up and just try to make you feel better. The one bad thing I think about Facebook is sometimes people use it to "Gossip." They talk about other people and it is one thing that I don't like about it.
6) What kind of culture does the example create?
It creates many types of cultures. There are groups that bring old and young people together, I created a page called "Alaskan Weight Watchers" so that people who are trying to be healthy can give each other encouragement to keep going. I really like it because its the people you know that are giving you advice rather than someone you don't know and wouldn't take them seriously.
I like Facebook because it helps me know what is going on in my friends and families life, and they get to know what is going on with mine. There are groups that you can join whether it be to help you lose weight, the sports you play in, or in the area you live to know what's going on in the community. Companies and people use it as advertising. Its a good way to get the word out and let people know about anything.

PBS Teachers
Quiz Yourself!- I did pretty bad for the 1st part of the quiz! I got 4 out of 12! I am very shocked that I didn't know what percentages of kids are doing on the internet. I tried to think of when I was those ages and see what I was doing on the internet, maybe that was just too long ago...hehe. I hope I do better on the second part!
Well, according to the second part of the quiz I have 4 out of the 6 tools in my classroom. I think that is pretty good. I think I need to look into these other sites and see what they have to offer!
The Digital Media Landscape!- I explored How Do I use it and the link that I chose was 21st century Learning Commons. This site helps educators teach students with tools that they are using today to help enhance their skills. This site is to help enhance 21st century learning, provide a technology-advanced to utilize INFOhio Electronics, and foster a sense of global community through a variety of technology and learning methods. I liked this site because it helps me see what teachers are using today. Being from the village, you get "behind" on all the new technology that is coming out and this site can help me keep up with it.
PBS Resources- The resource that I liked the most was Arthur's Guide to Media Literacy. I loved Arthur while I was growing up and I think it was very informational and beneficial to my learning. Each episode has a meaning for each thing that we need to learn like math, reading comprehension, and writing. They would watch the episodes and after have a class discussion then an assignment. I think that would be fun for the students to do instead of same homework everyday!
Integrating Digital Content and Tools- The ones that intrigued me the most was make a video and put it up on TeacherTube. I think it would be a great assignment to video record an event or lesson and put it up there to let the people who weren't there see it. It would be fun for the students' to record and pick out which of the clips they would like on there. It also helps parents know what their children are doing and gets them involved in their child's learning. Another one that intrigued me was create a class blog about weekly lessons. I would love to see all my student's reactions to the lessons, if they were interested in them or not, which ones that they enjoyed the most or least. It would help connection between me and the students that are shy to speak in front of others. The last one that I would do would be to have a guest speaker on Skype. Kids these days are very much into skype and I'm sure they would be excited to have an assignment or "lecture" done on Skype in school. They would get a sense that school can be fun as well as their daily habits. There are many intriguing tools on here but these are my top three that I would use in my classroom!

Media Deconstruction
I have been struggling with my weight most of my life and when an infomercial comes up about losing weight my whole attention is directed towards it. The thing that worked for me was Slim in 6 so I will do this on that.
1) Who paid for it? Slim in 6 is part of a huge company called Beachbody. They have many other different weight loss programs and videos there like Insanity, TurboJam, and P90X.
2) Why does the company need to do the ad? They need to do the ad to help their company make money by buying the videos. They also sell diet supplements and meal replacement shakes. Their weight loss programs are very good and they really do work.
3) What group is targeted by the ad? I think that people who want to be healthy and in shape are targeted in their advertisements. Just anyone that wants to be in shape and healthy.
4) What is the ad's "text" and "subtext?' The text is "Reshape your Body in 6 weeks- GUARANTEED!" I didn't see a subtext.
5) What value(s) are reinforced? I think the value of being healthy is reinforced. Reminding people to take care of their body.
6) What techniques of persuasion are used? I think the word GUARANTEED to lose weight is the persuasion of technique being used.

Deconstruction Gallery
Of the examples on the Deconstruction Gallery I chose Halloween Costumes.
1. Why does the company need to do the ad? Many costume stores do ads to sell their product. Every business is up for making money.
2. What group is targeted by the ad? Shoppers are targeted for the ad. They want people to buy their costumes to make them feel sexy or funny to mock some culture or race.
3. What is the ad's "text" and "subtext?" The ad only shows pictures of women dressed in costumes and have price tags on the bottom of each picture. It also shows the name of the costume.
4. Who paid for the ad? It doesn't show on the picture but I think that the people who are selling the costumes paid for the ad.
5. What different meanings would different people perceive? People would perceive some other people's costumes as offensive to them. They are mocking their culture by making the costume "sexy" and not the way it was used in their own culture.
6. What techniques of persuasion are used? The techniques that I think are used in this ad are association, bandwagon, beautiful people, group dynamics, and majority belief.

Media Reflection
I spend most of my time on media. During the weekdays I am on it less because I work from 8-5 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and on Tuesdays and Thursdays I work from 7-2:30. On the weekends is when I use it the most. I use it to do homework, check Facebook, check my emails, and personal use. The time of the day when I use it the most is during the evenings because I work in the day and I have classes in the evening which requires the internet to use Elluminate Live.
The media that I use the most is my Samsung Galaxy 2 phone. I have internet on there so I am on there most of the time when I am not at work or in class. I use it to check my email, use the internet for shopping, check my blackboard, Facebook, look up random things on Google, and research for any papers that I have to do. It is the one thing I rely on these days because it is mobile. I can go on it from anywhere at anytime. I don't have to go on a computer to access the internet, I can get it straight from my phone.
Living today, everyone has the need to have media in their life. It has become a necessity for one person, company, and business. Things get there faster through email and the internet has very reliable resources for anything you want. I choose my phone over anything else because it holds everything. I can text, call, and look at the internet all in one piece of media. It is very easy for me to do anything on there. I also listen to music on my phone, take pictures, and play phone games. I guess it depends on your mood of what you want to use. Something that makes you motivated to do something is the best way to get it done. We can also look at the news on it, look at the weather, and videos.
Yes I tend to multitask while I am doing homework, researching, or on Facebook. Right now I have four tabs on my internet web. When the mood hits I check my Facebook, check my email, do homework, and also check my homework for the week. I don't know why I do this, I guess it does really depend on one's mood. We like to do our homework, but we also like to know what is happening in our friends or families lives.
I was surprised of how much I rely on media today. I didn't realize how long I was spending time on it for all sorts of reasons. I guess it has become a huge part of my life, rather than the village when we just rely on the TV and internet.
